A milestone in the evolution of plaster casting methodology that emerged in the 1970s, Glass Fiber Reinforced Gypsum (Known as GFRG, or just GRG) further expands the plasterer’s craft into the realm of contemporary design and construction.

With certain modifications to long-established techniques, it is possible to mass-produce architectural elements that are both very strong and very lightweight:

• Regular Plaster of Paris is replaced with a precision-calcined “Alpha” gypsum which is both fast-setting and hard-setting.

• Liquid polymers are incorporated, increasing scratch and impact resistance.

• Engineered glass reinforcing fibers are used in the place of historically-employed natural fibers (such as burlap, jute or sisal).

• The resulting slurry and glass fibers may be spray-applied into moulds using a purpose-built pump and spray gun, facilitating production.

Our Hyde Park team’s vast experience in the creation of mouldings and architectural elements of all styles, shapes and sizes uniquely qualify us to fabricate GFRG for any project large or small. We work collaboratively with design teams during the development phase to ensure that their vision will be fully realized without compromise. We proactively consult with builders to confirm as-built dimensions and details for specific conditions.

Applications

Nearly any conceivable architectural shape may be fabricated using GFRG, including:

Mouldings, trims, reveals

Columns, capitals

Lighting Coves

Domes, vaults and other complex ceiling shapes

Large sculptural relief panels

Wall and ceiling panels

Benefits of GFRG

Unlimited possibilities – Nearly any shape, style or texture can be achieved in GFRG.

Will not burn – gypsum is a harmless, inert mineral that will not ignite.

Lightweight – when compared to traditional fabrication techniques, GFRG can be much lighter weight; requiring minimal support.

Easy installation — may be installed by Carpenters, Drywall Contractors, etc. using industry-standard techniques

Excellent substrate for finishes — cast gypsum provides an excellent substrate for paints and other finishes.
